Ombudsman attends World Conference of Ombudsmanís Institute

9 June 2009

The Ombudsman for the Defence Forces, Paulyn Marrinan Quinn, attended the Ninth World Conference of the International Ombudsman Institute which took place in Sweden in June. The conference also marked the 200th anniversary of Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsmen.

The world conference provided an opportunity for Ombudsmen to discuss topics of relevance with their peers from around the globe. Speaking in advance of the event,to Ms Marrinan Quinn said “this is an important event for Ombudsmen globally. From my point of view, it enables me to share my experiences of running an Ombudsman’s office specifically established to service the Defence Forces. Importantly, the event will offer an opportunity whereby I can learn about best practice and efficiencies in similar offices.”

The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) was established in 1978 and draws its membership from the public sector and independent ombudsman offices from around the world. World conferences are held every fourth year. This conference was hosted in Sweden to mark the bicentennial of the Swedish Parliamentary Ombudsman, and indeed the very concept of parliamentary ombudsmanship.
